The war in Ukraine and the massacres in Palestine/Gaza are the “New Normal” for War. The new weapons, the availability of drones, the use of AI , the technological attacks on civilian infrastructure, the economic methods that can immobilize the functioning of a society , and destruction of essential elements of survival all make civilians as much targets of war as once were strictly military objects and participants. It’s no longer a matter of sending troops out to a battlefield to defend their country’s interest. It’s an ability to destroy whatever and whoever it takes to make life unlivable in the portfolio of the enemy.
When we realize this, we can decide that there are more civilized ways to solve problems. We can stop opining about the brutality of an enemy and their atrocities to civilians, we can understand that war itself is an atrocity and a crime that must be ended.
